A dark, intoxicating, mysterious, visceral, austere voice that dances around wrapped in pointy sounds and obsessive rhythms: the Haitian-French singer Moonlight Benjamin with her album Siltane (2018) projects herself into the Olympus of the black voices of the new world music. A genre that increasingly unveils its pop ambitions, also due to careful productions and refined aesthetic choices. Here comes a lioness wandering around the stages of all Europe. It was in fact a “landmark” stage, such as Womax 2018 (in the Canary Islands) to reward her as one of the most interesting figures of this new blend of music. Those who already love Dobet Gnahoré and Fatoumata Diawara can find in Moonlight Benjamin a new expressiveness and an overwhelming musical approach: the roots are no longer (only) those of the African continent, as she picks on elements from the Creole culture, seasoning them with some blues, voodoo and sharp rock riffs, thanks to the excellent work of guitarists Matthis Pascaud and Matthieu Vial-Collet. The band is completed by bass player Quentin Rochas and Bertrand Noël on the drums. Once again, Candiani Groove opens a window to the world: we will listen to the concert with our eyes closed, sitting, unfortunately a bit squeezed up in the claustrophobia of an auditorium, not allowed to dance along, to move and to sweat in front of the stage for the musical blessing of our beloved shamans. Moonlight, you take care of us.
