“Envisioning a city from scratch on another planet without restrictions, can trigger change on earth”. According to Stefano Boeri, curator of space&interiors 2018, this is the key to rethinking our city from a completely different perspective. NASA has been investigating the possibility of building a human settlement on Mars for years now, and more recently entrepreneur and president of Tesla Motors, Elon Musk, sent one of his cars into space, reiterating his intention to colonise the red planet by 2020. In recent years, Stefano Boeri’s approach to architecture has focused not only on integrating new constructions with the surrounding ecosystem but encouraging them to engage in a symbiotic and mutually beneficial relationship. The hypothesis posed by the architect is therefore to imagine, through an exercise in abstract design, how we can improve our quality of life in the domestic and urban sectors, using the same innovative technology and materials that might well be used to design a Martian city. The exhibition presents a selection of new materials and furnishing solutions that are further explained through a sensorial installation that immerses visitors in the varied panorama of innovation applied to architecture and design. A journey not only to another planet, but to a new way of conceiving our relationship with the environment, which will perhaps awaken visitors to the idea that we shouldn’t wait a century to implement solutions that exist today and that, for all its worldliness, the Milan Design Week can help raise awareness about the one asset that we all share: the planet Earth.
