LARRY GUS

M.: Marker is founded on art, architecture and electronic music, and we use to make our events in unusual locations. Do you think that the architecture can influence your style of music? What is the coolest place from the point of view of the architecture where you’ve been playing? Why did you enjoy it a lot?

L.G.: Architecture, but mostly the city landscape itself, has been major influences in the way I work. At this moment I am reading Bernhard Leitner’s “The Wittgenstein House”, about the house that Wittgenstein designed, and it’s a weird match, because in a perverse way it fits perfectly with dfw’s
infinite jest, after knowing the fact that dfw himself was a huge Wittgenstein aficionado. Regarding my shows, i have no problem performing in sweaty basements in squats, or in post-modern amphitheaters in Reykjavik, i still try to channel the building itself with its surroundings in any case.

One of my biggest dreams though is to have a chance to perform on the top floor of Gio Ponti’s Pirelli Tower, because it was my favourite favourite building while I was living in Milan, mostly because i connected it deeply with my life there. Who knows, maybe some day?

M.: The theme of the night is “Les Chantes Magnétiques”. Le Chante Magnétique it’s that
song that you know perfectly, the one you cannot live without, the one you can always sing in your heart, the one that is in your past present future and that has a superstrong meaning for you. Which is your one and why is it so important?

L.G.: I love the notion of one, just one, ultimate and perfect song, that can almost be encyclopedic and contain a whole world of universes inside of it. For me, there are lots of such songs, and they keep coming to me once every couple of years. The two most recent ones are Joanna Newsom’s “Emily” and Jorge Ben’s “Assim Falou Santo Tomaz de Aquino”, and both of them carry within them the exact same thread of cosmic palimpsest combined with personal human intimacy, and at this point I can definitely say that all the works of art that really shocked me during my life (books, movies, paintings, poems, songs), all of them contained the universal and the singular, the eternal and the ephemeral.
