Scenic Reading of Selected Writings by and with Tim Etchells (UK)

The writing of British artist, performance-maker and novelist Tim Etchells (Forced Entertainment) is poetic, disturbing, surreal and compulsive. The worlds he creates in his fiction are populated by zombies, agents, kings, taxi-drivers, drunks, liars, prostitutes, unlucky shop-assistants, gun-men, amateur time-travellers and many more characters that seem to have fallen out of a normative societal image or else to have fallen out of time and space altogether. The landscapes he creates are surreal, sometimes hyper-real, dark and imaginary. The stories take place in these No-Wheres and One-Days often in an imaginary and extremely troubled country referred to as ‘Endland’.

Through his writing Etchells interweaves a question about psychic orientation, throwing us into the unstable geography and ontology of the fictitious worlds, digital worlds, dream worlds and inner/outer worlds of his marginalized characters. His writing is both microscopically reductionist and fantastical adventurous. He makes ambivalences and blurs productive, producing fiction that is at once imaginative, grotesque, polyphonic and highly reflexive, all the time pointing to the inadequacy of language in conveying the complexity, intensity, layering and confusion of contemporary life.

Tim Etchells’ writing – in line with his work leading the Forced Entertainment performance group, and his practice as a visual artist producing work in galleries and public sites – struggles with comprehending the Whole, and he does this in the most beautiful and thoughtful way. For Cabaret Voltaire he will read a selection of his Endland short stories and other texts.
