Subalterno1, the Milanese independent design and self-production gallery in Lambrate, is putting on a “surprise” exhibition and the surprise is going to be a good one, especially if you’re trying to escape from the city centre where design is seriously in your face. The theme is complex but increasingly relevant. This is how it starts: “Changing things means planning change and politics is the field in which to make things happen. Design can redesign politics.” In the words of Stefano Maffei, one of the curators.

The exhibition is the result of an open call and collects responses to the theme from the designers in the gallery’s extended circle, but it is only the first step in a series of exploratory projects underway in the world of transformation and change. So, what can we expect? Political artefacts… Ideas, systems, objects, communication? Probably a bit of everything and the exhibition design will definitely be brand new. It’s a must-see show basically. Especially given how the official press release ends: “We don’t just design things. We design the world.” How can you not be curious?
