As I write (26 March 2016), it is the 29th birthday of the Nike Air Max. I wanted to use this anecdote as the introduction to an article about Nike but from the little info we have received, it would seem that the event in question does not have anything to do with shoes or even shoe design. Ten designers, from Italian chair specialist Martino Gamper, to American lamp designer Lindsey Adelman, via eclectic Bertjan Pot who designs anything from carpets to new interpretations of the mirror ball, come together to display their vision of “natural movement” as a design object. I’m not entirely sure what to expect, but my freshly-customised Air Max won’t be making an appearance.
