Quite frankly I always struggle to describe William Basinski’s music. He doesn’t make ambient or tape music and, strictly speaking, he doesn’t make electronica but neither does he go in for a cacophony of drones. I think his “Disintegration Loops” are fairly indicative of his essence: music that undoes itself and breaks in continuation. And all this happens with a handful of repeated notes, reiterated in an infinitesimal movement that knows no limits nor coordinates. Shattered frames and elegant sounds that crumble into silence. It would also appear that part of the new show “Shadow In Time” is dedicated to David Bowie. This is music that tackles the experience of sound in its most pure and uncontaminated essence.
