San Paolo Fuori le Mura is one of the four major cathedrals in Rome, the second largest after St.Peter’s. It rises alongside Ostiense street, in the namesake suburb, near the left bank of Tevere, almost 2km outside Aurelian ramparts, coming out from Porta San Paolo. It is located in the place traditionally believed to host the tomb of the apostle Paolo (almost 3km away from the place of the martyrdom and beheading, known as “Tre Fontane”), the tomb of the saint is under the altar.
