“The Battle between Carnival and Feast” is Andrian Ghenie’s first solo show in Italy, dedicated to a cycle of nine paintings conceived as a circular dialogue with the history of Venice and the spaces of the magnificent Cini house-museum, in an evocative dialectical relationship with the great names of Venetian painting.
«There is never the idea of painting as an anachronism» commented Luca Massimo Barbero, director of the Giorgio Cini Foundation’s Institute of Art History «as something that must defend the past, but rather, some of the images come from frequent visits more familiar than the author with the internet ». Many of the canvases are composed of images of which the artist appropriates, re-contextualizing them totally: from clothes to objects of the post-digital age, in a dynamic of synthesis and recomposition.
